Coaching Players For Life

MIAMI -- Occasionally -- very occasionally -- a football person says something that punctures the fog of George Patton-style rhetoric that football people emit. Before a Super Bowl in the 1970s (the MCMLXXs, for those of you in a Super Bowl frame of mind), Dallas Cowboys running back Duane Thomas asked a subversive question about the game: "If it's the ultimate, how come they're playing it again next year?" But most football people, and especially football coaches, are of the "Football Is Not a Matter of Life and Death -- It's More Important Than That" school of thought. However, when Randy Shannon, recently named head coach of the University of Miami Hurricanes, says that football can be a matter of life and death, that is not hyperbole, it is autobiography. .

The first-year head coach of the Texas State Bobcats was driving toward his home base in San Marcos after several days on the recruiting trail. On the trip, Wright and new assistant coach Ben Norton had been through Plano, Lufkin, Palestine and Humble. "Luckily I'm with one of my assistants," Wright said. "Ben's in charge of the road map." It's been a wild few weeks for Wright, promoted from an assistant to head coach on Jan.22. For the past three years, Wright had served as the top aide to David Bailiff with the Bobcats. Coaching keeps Maurice young

Promoted to an NHL coach in Hartford in his late 20s, Paul Maurice felt his aging process already was accelerated. Thus, turning 40 yesterday was not a traumatic event. "I think the opposite is true," Maurice said. "You get addicted to this lifestyle, the emotional ups and downs, the gratification when you win, the horrible feelings when you lose. You get to the point where you need it, to where the summer feels like it's dragging until you get back at it. "It keeps your heart racing and keeps you feeling younger." As for any special birthday-night plans, Maurice quipped "I'm going to a hockey game." .
