Before a Super Bowl in the 1970s (the MCMLXXs, for those of you in a Super Bowl frame of mind), Dallas Cowboys running back Duane Thomas asked a subversive question about the game: "If it's the ultimate, how come they're playing it again next year?" But most football people, and especially football coaches, are of the "Football Is Not a Matter of Life and Death -- It's More Important Than That" school of thought. However, when Randy Shannon, recently named head coach of the University of Miami Hurricanes, says that football can be a matter of life and death, that is not hyperbole, it is autobiography. .

Texas State: Staff scrambles after coaching change

The first-year head coach of the Texas State Bobcats was driving toward his home base in San Marcos after several days on the recruiting trail. On the trip, Wright and new assistant coach Ben Norton had been through Plano, Lufkin, Palestine and Humble. "Luckily I'm with one of my assistants," Wright said. "Ben's in charge of the road map." It's been a wild few weeks for Wright, promoted from an assistant to head coach on Jan.22. For the past three years, Wright had served as the top aide to David Bailiff with the Bobcats. That changed on Jan. 18 when Bailiff accepted the head coaching job at Rice. At the time, Wright was named interim coach and began preparing for a recruiting weekend. "You get addicted to this lifestyle, the emotional ups and downs, the gratification when you win, the horrible feelings when you lose. You get to the point where you need it, to where the summer feels like it's dragging until you get back at it. "It keeps your heart racing and keeps you feeling younger." Tim Hagen, President stated, "We have added so many features, functionality, and benefits that both independent consultants and businesses will be blown away." The system comes with two primary functions. First, the system teaches a coaching methodology that comes with software to help monitor employee development. One feature is a scoring application where a manager can create custom scoring tools that help define both graphically and statistically where an employee needs additional coaching. If the manager does not know what to do, they are provided a help tool called, "The Coach's Corner" where they can search for coaching activities based on what that employee is challenged with. Second, there are learning tools for staff such as podcasts, web-based courses, and quick audio help files for various topics (getting past gatekeeper, closing ideas, etc.).

Two Matthews (Fox, McConaughey) link life, coaching

One Matthew plays a castaway in "Lost." It promises to be a nail biter, but regardless of the outcome, it's been a great year for the Buckeyes. Ranked as a pre-season No. 1, Ohio State held up to the challenge, week after week. Individual achievement accompanied the team's success, as some players emerged into team leaders. So what does Ohio State football have to do with business? More than you might first imagine. There are lessons to be learned in sports, if we just take time to look. Nobody would expect Ohio State to win without talented coaches. Starting in spring practice, and continuing each week in the fall, Jim Tressel and his team of assistants coached their players, both on and off the field. Solutions for Change, is announcing a unique, never before offered gift of dedicated personal life coaching for an entire month for the price of a typical one-hour session. PowerLife! is all about getting people untangled from overwhelm, unstuck from anxiety and depression, and turning on the zest for life juices. How are these things accomplished? With the power of 100% focus on the client and his or her issues. The holiday seasons are not wonderful, magical times for everyone. "I know from experience," says Sylvia, "that the dark days of winter and the Season of Good Cheer are all too often catalysts for major anxiety, loneliness and depression. These feelings can even cause illness, or make existing ones worse." Every year around this time, documentary specials and talk shows promote philanthropy - give to the poor, shelter, clothe and feed the homeless, give some 'buddy' time to those who live alone, and discuss other gestures of caring and sharing.

Report: Fisher, La. Focusing on the Ten Laws of Coaching (If you treat people as small, small is where they'll stay; we need performance, learning, and enjoyment, but we must keep them balanced; learning is easier than being taught, and more), Coaching at Work offers an up-to-date synthesis of many disparate ideas on the applications of coaching in the workplace. Coaching, as explored in this book, is a process of raising awareness, generating responsibility and building trust. The real skills of coaching are asking the right questions and listening to the responses. Rooted in the inner game approach of Tim Gallwey (there's always an inner game being played in the mind, and your awareness of it can make the difference between success and failure in the outer game you're playing), Coaching at Work offers an up-to-date synthesis of many disparate ideas on the applications of coaching in the workplace.

Life Coaching: Directing our lives

Imagine you are recruited to co-direct and star in a major motion picture by one of the top directors in Hollywood. Despite your lack of experience, you are presented with an amazing contract. Your friends, colleagues, and your lawyer all advise you to sign on the dotted line. You follow their advice and take the job. Shooting starts in 10 days. A chauffeured limousine arrives at the studio to take you to the set. You get out of the car and find yourself at the door of your own home. Whether we know it or not, we all are called upon to direct and star in the film of our own lives. If we have already assumed this role, there might be room for improvement and we can fine-tune what we are already doing. If we haven't started the job yet, it's never too late to begin. Assistant coach Jim Molinari will take over as the interim head coach. The Golden Gophers fell to 2-5 on Wednesday when Clemson defeated them 90-68 in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The university has scheduled a press conference to announce Monson's decision at 4 p.m. on Thursday. Monson had spent eight seasons in Minnesota. He posted a 118-106 record over that time, including a 44-68 record in Big Ten conference play. "I'm delighted to have brought the saga to a happy conclusion, if only because it will mean I will now be asked something else when I talk to the Press. It's going to have a big effect on me during the rest of season because I've got a lot of homework ahead." .

Ology First Business Coaching Franchise to Offer International ...

October 31, 2006 - OLOGY has become the first international franchise to send its franchisees on a world-renowned coach training programme. Working by referral is based on intentionally creating and maintaining relationships built on trust and loyalty. The results are a successful business, with an increased bottom line. That often feels like more fun than work. This includes working with people you like and who appreciate you. Recently, Im coaching some experienced Realtors who may not want to take time off, take time for themselves or delegate because something better business-wise came along. I advise them to actually block days off in order to make family time/vacations non-negotiable. Its part of Brians Win the Day formula because when that is allowed to happen, virtually everyone comes back saying it made a positive difference.

Ole Miss wins in Kennedy's Rebel coaching debut

OXFORD — Andy Kennedy was victorious tonight in his debut as the Ole Miss mens basketball coach, beating Mississippi Valley State 72-49 in the season opener for both schools at Tad Smith Coliseum. Including a few last crumbs from Sunday's Bishop Bowl ... Most of the talk surrounding the Bombers over the next couple of months will revolve around free agents, and which ones may or may not be back in '07. Just as important to watch -- but for very different reasons -- are assistant coaches Mike Gibson and Greg Marshall, head coach Doug Berry's two right-hand men. Gibson has drawn mixed reviews running the offence the last two years. At times his play-calling this season left you wondering if Charles Roberts was even in the game. Skilled at working with clients to help them uncover and pursue their goals, coaches provide a customized process with built in accountability. But all of this comes at a price. A price many people can’t afford. With some executive and life coaching rates as high as $700 a month, a large portion of the population are excluded from taking advantage of all that working with a coach can provide. Empowering Moments is ready to change that.Empowering Moments’ mission is to empower people to attain self-defined success in their professional and personal lives through coaching, motivation, information, and inspiration. "Our organization is designed to provide access to top coaches from around the country to people who don’t have the resources to retain a personal coach," says Doreen Rainey, President of Empowering Moments. "Through membership, they receive benefits that include monthly teleseminars and our bi-monthly magazine. As the seventh week of football starts, Jim Fassel of the Ravens and Keith Rowen of the Cardinals were both released from their respective positions of authority. Rowen was my former offensive line coach at the University of Arizona and I watched his career progress nicely over time. Fassel is the former head coach of the New York Giants and was good enough to bring the Giants to the Super Bowl, but not good enough to run the Ravens' offence. On a football team you have a head coach, coordinators and positional coaches. In modern football, the head coach has evolved into more of a designator then coach. He delegates who does what and has the biggest influence in game day decisions. They are also usually the best evaluators of personnel.

Coaching comes naturally

Growing up in Harbour City, Calif., Cummins was a three-sport athlete and had aspirations to be a basketball star. The top end of coaching a high school sport is about $4,000 and ranges downward, perhaps as low as $2,000 per season. In a 13-week season, coaching three hours a day plus preparation time planning practice routine and game strategy means an hourly wage of about $13 per hour.

Coaching comes naturally

Growing up in Harbour City, Calif., Cummins was a three-sport athlete and had aspirations to be a basketball star. If Cora doesn't get his shot this time, he could become the White Sox's bench coach. . . . After starting the season 1-6-1, Forsberg noted that the firing of head coach Ken Hitchcock was a bit of a shock, yet it was good for the team. " Sometimes its good to get a change, it doesnt matter what you do. John Stevens is a winner, and the young guys like him, and hes going to be a good change for us. When Ive dealt with him, hes been great". The Flyers don't play until Thursday night when the Atlanta Thrashers visit Philadelphia. It is unclear whether or not Forsberg will be suiting up for the match. Training tends to be a defined period of time when you go and you learn something… There is a continuum where at one end there is training and at the other end there is psychiatry. … and sitting in the middle is coaching. It is about entering the way the person views the world and helping them identify options that will help them work more effectively. Why do you think people should consider coaching? Firms understand you have to get staff trained up in new systems and technical qualifications. But the one thing that a lot of people don’t think will be so useful, are people skills. The skills that are laughingly referred to as the soft skills - and I'm not really sure why, because they are often the hardest skills to acquire.

Brad Sugars' Latest Book Reveals How Business Coaching Helps Small ...

(OPENPRESS) October 4, 2006 -- Serial entrepreneur Brad Sugars, who is credited with creating the concept of business coaching, gives aspiring entrepreneurs a glimpse into the world of 'smart' business in his latest 'Instant Success' book, The Business Coach. Published by McGraw Hill, The Business Coach reveals how business coaching helps small businesses succeed by using the story of a business run by a hard-working husband & wife team. Sugars uses their experience to guide readers through the process of developing a business that makes a consistent profit and runs like a 'well-oiled machine' without the owners' day-to-day involvement. The methods Sugars outlines in The Business Coach are drawn from his wide experience of working with small businesses as chairman and founder of Action International, the world's largest business coaching organisation.
